give me a condor's quill! give me Vesuvius' crater for an inkstand Herman Melville

a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling

Jimmy Buffet came up with that line. I like it though i'm not sure what it means.

Helen says it's like a photograph, or something. Rajan says it's like a scar.

Hmm.

This is a line Kurt Vonnegut came up with:

we are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be

I do understand what that means. It makes me think it may have been a mistake beginning with that Herman Melville quote - I mean, Vesuvius' crater for an inkstand!

I like Herman Melville and Kurt Vonnegut. I also like Jimmy Buffet but in a different way.

On the subject of things l like I would like to bring one more quote to your attention. This one's by David Berman and it's been with me for a long time:

whenever I go downtown, I always wear a corduroy suit, cause its made of a hundred gutters that the rain can run right through...

I like corduroy. I have never owned an entire suit though.

I also like to think of myself as the type of person who swims in the sea no matter how cold it is. This is only half true.

That's me. Mysterious, no?

Well, that's the idea.

My name isn't Richard Barks, it's Richard Barker, I was just trying to be clever. Clever and punchy. Don't know if it works but that's the name of this site for the next two years now - whether I like it or not.

Hey! I guess that's a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.

Cool.

Anyway, I've been doing an MA in Professional Writing for the last few months. It is now May. It will be summer soon. I'm supposedly going to be working on a novel until October. I don't know what happens then. I would like to earn money by writing - writing for food. That would be good.

Creative writing, copy writing, anything.

I may try and create a new literary movement called 'Edible Writing'. The better you write the nicer it tastes.

By the way, I live in Falmouth, Cornwall. I have recently moved into a caravan. Some people say it looks Retro. Ha!

The wind is very strong. That's no joke.
